if you study physics or electronics at school, u have probably used and seen an oscilloscope. this is a test equipment, useful for testing circuits.
i don't use 'scopes everyday, in fact, if i have one, the reason is not a practical one, but only being fascinated by the looks of it. (again and again! only for the LOOKS!) the ruggedness, the systematic layout of the knobs, the rays emitted from the cathode ray tubes, especially the green ones, i can spend hours looking at the dance of the displayed waves.
a decent 'scope is very expensive, and it's another useless/useful item that catches the recording engineer's heart.
