akg k1000 headphones this is my ultimate dream headphones. for normal headphones, the drivers usually stick to the ears to minimalize leakage, this headphone, when worn, sticks out of the ear and is just like hearing 2 miniature speakers placed near the ears. as usual, i am fascinated by the look, more than the functionality of it. the 2 red cross headbands, the charcoal black grille of the "speakers", speaks class and elegance.... it's difficult to get one now because it's discontinued, too bad i did not get it on time.

if you study physics or electronics at school, u have probably used and seen an oscilloscope. this is a test equipment, useful for testing circuits. i don't use 'scopes everyday, in fact, if i have one, the reason is not a practical one, but only being fascinated by the looks of it. (again and again! only for the LOOKS!) the ruggedness, the systematic layout of the knobs, the rays emitted from the cathode ray tubes, especially the green ones, i can spend hours looking at the dance of the displayed waves. a decent 'scope is very expensive, and it's another useless/useful item that catches the recording engineer's heart.

neumann ku100 this is a microphone. there are 2 microphones, each embedded in the dummy head's ear, the function of this mic is to emulate a human's hearing environment, to capture a 3d hearing experience. hearing the materials recorded in this mic in headphones feels so itchy! i've listened to scissors flipping through the head just like real. as a "shameless" confession, i'd say i always go for the looks of a recording instrument! sometimes it's not the just the sound, the looks of the dummy head is so sexy, the black, the smoothness, touches the engineer at an emotional level. my engineer/producer idol, tchad blake, is a keen promoter for this recording method, binaural recording. someday, if i had the money, i'll get one, and record my voice on it, and it will bite your ears so itchy, sexy.

nagra audio recorder this is an analog open reel tape recorder, and in this digital era, where everything is done in a computer, this is a useless machine, it's bulky, the tapes are very difficult to buy. if someday i am going to have this recorder, to be frank, i will not use either! i fall for the design of this machine, very rugged and industrial. most important, this is the classic machine for movie location recordists, a profession which i think is very cool and romantic, being able to go to open spaces or some unknown places, to "collect sounds".... this always fascinates me.

i'll be performing with my long time "idol" this weekend! wot happens if u have really love an artist, .... my friend did it, he invited him to come to hongkong to sing for him, instead of flying over to see his concert. that's the most crazy thing i've ever heard in a long time. anyway, the pale faced icon of all those who grew up in the 80s, david sylvian is going to perform here next month. expecting to see lots of familiar faces then.
