Not a definate right or wrong conclusion but somehow tells the difference a little bit. *destiny. i am not doing this as my ma studies but seems they are quite interested in it. i mean, i just used it in one of my previous works, and since ecause iam trying to do the merging of to notions(chinese-english) i think ‘palm reading’ itself is a reveal of the traditional chinese culture that would be part of my research interest . maybe its because i didn’t state it clearly. also i am also intersted in Melies description on destiny beliefs in turkey. *seoul, by Lynn. intersting river stories. similar to the situation in china as well. artificial rivers, due to some forces of adminstration, government, money and so on. *punctuation, by chrysms. sentenses, emotions, with or without punctuations, devided sentences, different places for different meanings. *girls all in the same dress and make ups by fiona. *, recommended by nikos and david. i downloaded a pdf version. few pages read, pretty hard to understand. More DAY 12 (09-09-2011) WITH ALEXANDRA today was the exhibition for Workshop 3. I set up the works yesterday as a curation for my three workshops during Orientation course. I also met with Alexandra to talk about the feedback of Workshop2 writing and Worshop3 proposal. First of all, let’s review the exhibition of today. This was a final review of my whole process of the three workshops I undertook during the Orientation of MA course. Workshop 3: My virtual museum (work on progress) Sunday Xu : Orientation to MA Curate yourself amongst the artists and the theorists that you are inspired from, in a form of a virtual museum. (Outcome: visual outcome+academic writing) Workshop 3 required to design a virtual museum, where I would place my works in connection to other creative professionals / theorists’ work that I find pertinent. This would facilitate me not only to talk about my MA proposal but also research my references and connect them to my interests. My project is about cultural identity (collective and personal); for the practical outcome of that project I used the brain as a metaphor for my thinking. The brain as an object is my “thought container” symbolizing my self-reflection while moving from the Eastern to the Western world and merging the two cultures while shifting my identity. Workshop 3: My virtual museum/ practical outcome (work on progress) Sunday Xu : Orientation to MA The brain as an object in itself is separated into left and right part. I have placed quotes and theoretical text on the left (literary) part of the brain while I placed my visual references on the right (visual) part. Workshop 1: My journey: Expectations- endings and beginings Sunday Xu : Orientation to MA (Outcome: visual ) This workshop required to narrate, in a visual way, my life journey placing emphasis on the personal links that pushed me to pursue an MA. Observing different graphic symbols in China and the UK, I finally used the London ‘tube map’ and the Chinese ‘palm map’ as graphic ways that represent different types of journeys. My project is not just a graphical comparison, but I also use these two maps as a cultural reference, to comment on the different perspetives that the 2 different cultures (English- Chinese) have towards life. The tube map symbolizes the busy urban life of London, where physical travelling holds an important role, and the hand ‘map’ symbolizes the rather more spiritual Chinese culture focusing more on destiny and soul- body journey. By connecting these two maps I not only visualize my journey from China but also my MA research interest on how collective identity is influenced by the exchange of population between China and the UK. Here are some of the corrcitions of Workshop 2 and Workshop 3. Less |

More This week is a tight-scheduled week for Tony’s project— AN EDITION OF…. AN EDITION OF…. is a two-day project based around artists’ books and editions. We are required to make our own limited edition object/book. This small ‘publication’ we are to make focuses on an aspect of the walk we undertook with Michael last Monday. Part or all of the material we collected during the walk should therefore form the basis of the ‘publication’ we produce. Tony showed us lots of his collections of artists’ books and editions in order to inspire us with a diversity of book forms and contexts. This is an calendar edition from an American artist called Erica Van Horn(http://beinecke.library.yale.edu/digitallibrary/vanhorn.html). In this calendar, she collected the inside of the envelope, in which the letter sent to her was put. Then she cut piece of the interior and pasted it onto the pages of every month. What inspired me is that the designer view things in uncommon ways. The interior of the envelope had different patterns on it. But it is not easy or regular to look at. This is a very good example for me to look at. Because I believe designers should be able to show people something even though it is ordinary but not that easy to find out. That is one of the essential abilities of a designer. He/she can look into something in unordinary way or from special aspects. Another inspiring book is the above one that it cuts a piece of hole every page. It’s very interesting to do this because readers and see some patterns/colors/images on the next page through this hole. Then, it becomes a part of this page. And if you turn over the page then you realize it is a hole actually. In this ‘publication’, we are required to use what we collect from THE WALK led by Michael. As we were required to make 13 copies of this, we needed to think about what kinds of forms or outcomes would be suitable. Looking back at what I have got from the walk, it was mostly a obscure impression because it was just the forth day I arrived in London. So Camberwell was plain to me and I was just following the way Michael led us. I was just a stranger to the area not knowing where we were heading for, what is the name of the street. I came up with an idea that being a new comer, it could be fun even though you have known nothing about it. Then, how could it be? Coming into a new place, we can do many things to explore the land and get to know more about it. But it is because it is new to me, so I have no idea about what to do to explore this place. Actually, we can just follow our intuition and go anywhere we want to. Then it comes to an idea called ‘Just Follow Your Heart’. This comes from a little game that I played in childhood. In Chinese, we call it ‘Dong-Nan-Xi-Bei’(East-South-West-North). It is a kind of game that we played to play tricks on each other. We need to fold the paper into a shape and we write the four directions on the top of it. Choose a direction and count for a number. Then we starts to move the paper and it stops at the times we have choose already. Then unfold the paper to see what you should do. What I want to do in this is to create a little game for people to play when they come to a new place. They may have no idea about what they can do. So they can play this little game to help them find out what is interesting in this new city. I designed this because this could become an interaction with the reader. They could play as the instructions at the back. And this originally was graphic, but it could be dimensional as well as after folded. It’s just like the Yohji Wave in the Wapping Project. Audience could be more absorbed in the work. Besides, by folding the paper, they themselves take part in the completion of the work and can have interaction with the designer. That is the distinguishing feature of it. Less |

More Camberwell College of ArtsMA Graphic DesignSunday XU (Jianwen Xu)Research Question Stability and vibration - defining individual identity with movements on public transportations in the cityStudy ProposalIn my MA project and research issue, I would like to focus on the notions of the stability and vibrations that I experience daily as a new comer in this city. As I am studying master in a city far away from home, I myself am being in a changing point and a new starting point, which makes me feel unstable and unknown to the environment around me. The process of getting used to the new environment is a journey of self-defining and self-locating. During this process, I am experiencing the stability and vibrations of this city. For the first layer in the meaning of ‘stability and vibration’, it’s about the physical movements and shakes. There will be vibrations when the alarm clock rings though it’s minor. Precise equipment and facilities are used to monitor the heartbeats, earthquakes and wind turbulence. As an individual in the situation stated above, being a new comer, I am going to pick a kind of public transportations that I take daily, for example buses, tubes and trains, as spaces to test out the vibrations. Thousands of people are commuting through public transportations every day and they are experiencing these vibrations along the journey. I plan to visualize these shakes by holding an ink pen in hand to trace the movements of buses and tubes. Moreover, stability and vibration can be referred to social events like the riots that took place in early August and the National Strike in November. These are big historical events and moments. They are vibrations of the society and social classes. This is the deeper meaning of ‘stability and vibration.’ This can be developed into a further research topic and project that relates to the social problems.Besides the individual project, I am also doing a collaborating work with Dongdong in the project of ‘Jessica’. This is also relevant to my project, which is about defining identity. The story for ‘Jessica’ is about a mental patient who is in love with his split personality named Jessica. He loved Jessica so much that he kills her, which means he kills himself. The above is about the project that I am planning to realize. My research will be practical based. I will have most of the projects and experiments done on public transportations, like buses and tubes. Images and videos may be included as ways of presenting the idea. I am still doing research on references and contexts that related to the project. Less |
